Noel Marrero (Bronx, NY/Lehman) closed out his opponent, Jeffrey Dang at third singles 6-1, 6-1 to score the fifth match point for a 5-0 victory over Brooklyn College in the quarterfinal round of the CUNY Athletic Conference men's tennis championship tournament on Saturday morning at the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
Marrero gave the Hawks their first match point of the day when he teamed up with sophomore
Mark Goldfinger (New York, NY/School of the Future) for an 8-2 victory over Matthew Micharlsen and Nam Nyugen at third doubles. Then the freshmen duo of
Yevgeny Perepelov (Brooklyn, NY/Keystone National) and
Irving Salazar (Corona, NY/John Bowne) took their first doubles match 8-4, while sophomores
Alex Stanciu (New York, NY/Locust Valley) and
Ian Katz (Woodside, NY/American Studies) won second doubles 8-2.
Perepelov was then the first to finish in singles, defeating Anthony Chan 6-0, 6-0 before
Marrero put the match away. At the time of finish, the Hawks were up on three of the four remaining courts with
Stanciu leading 6-0, 5-2 and serving for match point.
Goldfinger was also close to finishing as he led 6-1, 5-1 over Vesna Tan at sixth singles.
The Hawks (13-3) now advance to the semifinal round on Tuesday where they will face John Jay (10-3) who advanced after defeating York College 5-0 on Saturday afternoon. In their last meeting back on April 10, the Hawks were victorious 7-2. In last year's semifinals, the Hawks narrowly defeated the Bloodhounds 5-3 to advance to the championship match.
