Hawks Defeat Conference Foe 7-2

New York, NY - The Hunter College men's tennis team got conference competition underway for the 2011 season with a strong 7-2 victory against Lehman College on Thursday, March 17.

On the singles side of things, the Hawks were impressive taking five of the six matches. Hunter's No. 1, Luis Quintero got the Hawks going, winning his match handedly (6-2, 6-1). The Hawks' No. 2, Arthur Kapetanakis followed Quintero's lead, defeating Lehman's Michael Tal 6-2, 6-3.

In the No. 3 spot Thomas Lin continued the winning trend with a victory (6-3, 7-6, 9-7) against his Lehman foe. The wins did not stop there as Mark Goldfinger claimed a victory of his own against Cesar Andrade (6-4, 6-3).

The Hawks ran into their first bit of trouble in the No. 5 match as Lehman's Philip Akogu claimed the Lightning's only singles victory of the day over Wilfredo Garcia (6-4, 6-3).

Finishing up the singles competition, Stanislav Tsoy obtained the Hawks final victory with an exciting 7-6, 8-6, 6-4 win.

On the doubles side, the Hawks added two more victories, with No. 1 Quintero and Lin taking home an 8-2 victory, while the No. 2 team of Goldfinger and Kapetanakis won 8-5. Lehman took the finals double match 8-4.

With the victory the Hawks are now 1-0 on the season, while Lehman drops to 0-1. Hunter will return to action when they take on another conference foe, Brooklyn College on March 22.
