Flushing, NY – On Saturday, April 30, the men's tennis team took on the Lightning of Lehman College in the quarterfinal round of the CUNYAC/HSS Tennis Championship at the USTA National Tennis Center. The Hawks cruised to an easy win as they dominated all three doubles matches and then continued to win in singles. With the win, Hunter moves to 9-2 overall while Lehman ends their season at 4-8.
Luis Quintero and Yevgeny Perepelov played at first doubles and easily handled Raul Santana and Michael Tal 8-1 to notch the first win. Roy Forberg and Arthur Kapetanakis followed up with another win at second doubles, taking down Jahi Abasi-Jabbar and Cesar Andrade by a score of 8-4. Rounding out doubles was Thomas Lin and Mark Goldfinger as they put the Hawks up 3-0 in the match with an 8-1 win over Philip Akogu and Marcos Coto-Batres.
As stated in the CUNYAC championship rules, the match is concluded once a team reaches five points. The Hawks needed just two wins in singles play to close out the match and did just that. Quintero at the number two slot and Goldfinger at sixth singles each closed out their opponents by scores of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 respectively to secure the win for the Hawks.
The Hawks continue their run to defend their CUNYAC title today, May 2 when they head back to the USTA National Tennis Center to take on the College of Staten Island in the semi-finals beginning at 5pm.
