Hawks Zap Lightning, 7-2 in CUNYAC Opener

BOXSCORE

BRONX, NY –
The Hunter College men's tennis team continued its winning ways as it soundly defeated the Lehman Lightning, 7-2 on Thursday evening.

The Hawks (3-0, 1-0 CUNYAC) won all but two matches—a pair of default victories for Lehman (0-1, 0-1 CUNYAC) to win the third straight match.

Hunter claimed the first two doubles matches in convincing fashion as Luis Quintero and Robert Frischling-Sosman defeated Michael Tal and Philip Akugo, 8-1. Damen Ellingson and Arthur Kapetanakis followed suit, taking the second doubles match, 8-2 before the Lightning picked up a default victory in the third.

Singles play saw the Hawks rattle off six straight victories. Quintero got Hunter started in the first singles match as he handled Tal with ease, taking the first set 6-0 and the second 6-1. Kapetanakis dropped Andrade 6-2 in the first set before claiming a 3-2 default win in the second set.

Ellingson kept the Hawks win streak alive, winning 6-0 and 6-3 over Akugo. Then Frischling-Sosman defeated Coto-Batres by the same score of 6-1 in both sets. Luu wrapped things up for the Hawks in the fifth singles match as he topped Linde, 6-1 and 6-0 to make it a 7-1 affair.

The Lightning's Cirilo earned the default victory in the sixth singles match to account for today's final, 7-2.

Hunter returns to competition Wednesday, March 21 when it travels to St. Joseph's-Long Island to take on the Golden Eagles in a non-conference match.
