FLUSHING, NY - The Hunter College men's tennis team opened its home season this afternoon with a 6-3 victory over the visiting Manhatanville College Valiants at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Hawks went unblemished in doubles action, claiming three victories and added three singles wins to claim the victory and improve to 1-0 on the season.
Luis Quintero and
Arthur Kapetanakis defeated Michael Capozzi and Andres Rivera, 8-5 before
Yevgeny Perepelov and
Damen Ellingson defeated Dean Tahir and Gabriel Berlingeri, 8-4 in the second doubles match. The third doubles match proved to be quite the contest, lasting over two hours as
Binh Luu and
Robert Frischling-Sosman rallied from a 7-3 defeat to take the second set 9-8 before clinching the win in an 11-9 tiebreaker.
Perepelov dominated Capozzi, wining 6-1 and 6-4 in the first singles match. Then, Quintero topped Tahir, 6-1 in both sets to make it a 5-0 affair in favor of the Hawks. Kapetanakis won the first set 7-6 in a 7-3 tiebreaker before taking the second set 6-3 to give the Hawks their final victory of the day as the Valiants took the next three singles matches for the final tally, 6-3.
Hunter returns to the courts this Saturday, March 10 when they travel to Rutgers-Newark.
