BRONX, NY - The Hunter College men's tennis team made the first move in defense of its CUNYAC Championship, defeating the Lehman Lightning, 5-0 in the opening round of the 2012 CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Championship on Wednesday Afternoon.
Hunter improves to 8-6 while Lehman falls to 4-10, as its season comes to a close. The Hawks will play #2 John Jay on Sunday, April 29th at 3pm.
The Hawks got off to a quick start with three wins in doubles.
Luis Quintero and
Irving Salazar topped Michael Tar and Cesar Andrade, 8-3.
Damen Ellingson and
Robert Frischling-Sosman were next on tap, defeating Ben Cirilo and Marcos Coto-Batres, 8-4. Finally,
Arthur Kapetanakis and
Binh Luu soundly handled Andres Restrepo and Leonardo de Oliveria, 8-0.
The Hawks needed just two more victories at singles to clinch the win and got those from Quintero who defeated Tal, 6-1 and 6-0. Finally, Salazar beat Restrepo, 6-0 and 6-2 to send the Hawks back to the semifinals.
