Sharon Monplaisir ’85 Inducted into US Fencing Hall of Fame

NEW YORK, NY – On June 30th 2012, Women's fencing standout, National Foil Champion, three time Olympian, and Hunter College Hall of Famer Sharon Monplaisir (class of '85) was inducted into the US Fencing Hall of Fame.

Monplaisir ushered in a new era of success for Hunter's women's fencing program in the 1980's. A U.S. national champion in 1988, Monplaisir received her BA and competed for Hunter College, and was an NCAA All-America selection in 1983, 1985, 1986, and 1987, as well as NIWFA Champion in 1983 and 1985.
 
In 1984, she was the recipient of the Southland Olympian Award for athletic and academic achievement. Monplaisir received a Women's Sports Foundation Travel and Training grant in 1990, and was inducted to the Hunter College Hall of Fame in 1990. 

In her career as an athlete, Monplaisir was also a four-time Olympian, representing the United States in Fencing at the 1984 games in Los Angeles, California, 1988 games in Seoul, Korea, and in the 1992 games in Barcelona, Spain. Monplaisir was also a member of the U.S. World Team for seven years, from 1985 to 1992. She also was a member of the Pan American teams that won the gold medal in 1987 and 1991, and a member of the World University Team in 1983 and 1987.
 
Sharon is married to three-time Olympian Pentathlete Michael Gostigian, is the proud mother of twins Sienna and Gunnar, and currently runs her own business as a personal trainer.  Additionally, she has done extensive professional modeling and been the subject of two books: Sword a Champion: the Story Sharon Monplaisir by Doreen and Michael Greenberg;  Get a gold medal butt  by Gary Guerriero and Mary Leonard with Ron Holland.
