2012 NCAA Men's Volleyball Semi-Finalists Celebrated at NYU Match

Hawks Suffer 3-2 Loss Against NYU

New York, N.Y. - The 2012 men's volleyball team were celebrated on Tuesday night for being semi-finalists in the inaugural NCAA Division III men's volleyball championship.  The men were presented with gifts from Director of Athletics, Intramurals, and Recreation Terry Wansart, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Madlyn Stokely, and head coach Ray Bello as a token of their success. The team has also received a banner in the Hunter Sportsplex recognizing their outstanding achievements. 

 After the ceremony, the 2013 team played the Violets of NYU in their second non-conference match of the season.  The men started out strong, taking a commanding 2-0 lead, but the Violets fought back and won the next three sets, handing the Hawks their second loss of the season.  With the loss, Hunter drops to 0-2 while NYU improves to 2-0.

Senior middle blocker Braien Otsla led the Hawks with a team-high of 19 kills, while adding one ace, one block solo and two digs.  Junior Matthew Ng chipped in with 15 kills, eight digs, and one ace.  Senior libero Eric Lodde had nine digs while sophomore setter Stanley Martinez had 41 assists, eight digs, and six block assists.  Senior Moshood Jinad helped with four kills and seven digs.

NYU was led by Colin LaPorte with 12 kills, and Keith Waddell with 11 kills.  George Koch and Nick Capriccio each had 10 kills.

The Hawks are back in action when they travel to Langhorne, Pennsylvania on February 5th when they compete against Carin University.  The game is slated for a 7:00pm start.
