New York, N.Y. - The men's and women's fencing teams, who opened their season Halloween weekend look to build off of their success at the Temple Open and Vassar College as they compete in MACFA event at John's Hopkins on November 24th.
Coach
Randy Bresil, coming off a tough season, seems optimistic about this year's crop of fencers. After a strong showing in their first competition of the year the team is feeling optimistic and excited to compete again. When asked who he thought would flourish this year, Bresil responded "Barbara and
Joanna Syska who have a strong history in fencing. On the men's side we have
Alberto Linaldi and
James Ferraiolo who both had excellent results at the 34th annual Temple Open. The future is bright for hunter fencing." Both Linaldi and Ferrailo are quick and elusive, making prime fencers. The Syska sisters, both sabres, will look to continue to grow their skills in the 2013 2014 season.
Fencing, though an individual sport, relies on team leaders to keep the team together and focused. Coach Bresil also described the leaders of his two teams. "On the women's side our leaders are Captain
Irene Yenko for foil,
Monica Yuen for saber, Meagen Desir for Epee." Then Bresil commented for the men, "This year for the men we will have squad captains
Anthony Musto who will lead our épée team while freshmen
Alberto Linaldi heads the foil squad and finally senior
Alexis Chavez will anchor the saber squad. Each of these individual brings an aspect of leadership and professionalism that represents the values of being a Hunter Hawk!"
Finally, when asked about his expectations for this upcoming season, Bresil calmly responded that "we are prepared and we are consistently getting better with every competition. We have the talent and work ethic to compete on a national level. If we keep working in the right direction, we will achieve success well beyond my expectations."
