Poughkeepsie, NY – Hunter College men's fencing wrapped up competition at the Vassar Invitational this past weekend, posting victories against University of Incarnate Word (15-12) and West Point (14-13).
The Purple and Gold competed in eight rounds of competition on Saturday, falling in six of them to Stevens Tech (7-20), Vassar College (6-21), Yeshiva University (13-14), Drew University (3-24), Sacred Heart University (9-12) and Haverford College (8-19).
Hunter started the day with a huge win against Incarnate Word, knocking off the Division I school. The match started with a 8-1 victory in sabre as
Benjamin Sanitis,
Andrew Wang,
Hector Moran and
Zaheer Booth each contributed with a win.
The Hawks then defeated the Cardinals in the foil bout with a score of 6-3 to capture the overall victory.
Michael Khodorkovsky, Noah Collins and
Kenneth Hoe paced the team to close out the win.
The Purple and Gold seized their third win of the season later in the day against West Point, recording a score of 14-13.
The epee team started off the match with a dominating 7-2 victory as Aaron Bauchie,
Bernard Slawomirski and Jimmy Ferraiolo each converted for the Hawks.
West Point got back in the match with a 7-2 win in the foil bout to tie the score.
In the first round of sabre, Hunter took a 2-1 lead with Moran and Booth each recording victories. From there West Point tied it up again, sending it into the third round with a score of 3-3.
Wang subbed in for Hunter in the third round, grabbing a crucial victory to put the Hawks up 4-3 and Ben Sanitis closed it out for Hunter with a win of his own to give the Purple and Gold a 14-13 triumph.
The Hawks return to action on Sunday, Nov. 20 when they host a MACFA event in the Hunter fencing room.
