NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Hunter College men's fencing team competed at the Nikki Franke Classic this past weekend in foil and épée, presenting promising performances, competitive resilience and forward movement under Head Coach
Randy Bresil.
Men's Foil
Junior
David Xing posted a solid first-round pool performance, showcasing tactical promise and competitive composure. His efforts underscore the continued growth of Hunter's foil contingent as the season progresses.
Men's Épée
In épée,
Steven Zhang advanced into the Direct Elimination —an important milestone. He gave a strong showing, taking an early lead against Lupo Sala of Drew before ultimately being defeated. Zhang's progression to the knockout stage and his intensity in the bout reflect his upward trajectory and the depth being built in the épée squad.
Moving Ahead
With the tournament structure of first-round pools → second-round or seeding pools → direct elimination (and consolation where applicable), Hunter's men took full advantage of the competitive format. While podium finishes were not the outcome this time, performances across both weapons provide tangible foundation blocks for the season ahead. Coach Bresil shared, "We aim to treat every bout—from pool to direct elimination—as an opportunity to improve. This weekend, our men leaned into that mindset. The depth is increasing and the results reflect it." The Hawks leave the Nikki Franke Classic with sharpened focus, team unity, and clear momentum.
