New York, NY – The men's volleyball team will face the Wentworth Institute of Technology this coming Saturday, April 16 in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Tournament. First serve slated for a 6:30pm start on the Leopard's home court at the Nelson Recreation Center in Boston, Massachusetts. This is the Hawk's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012.
The Hawks (24-9) earned their way into the Tournament by way of an automatic berth from winning the CUNYAC Championships and snapping Baruch's seven year run of championships. Earning the #2 seed in the tournament, they defeated Brooklyn College and John Jay in straight 3-0 sets to secure their spot in the finals. There, they took down top seeded Baruch College on their home court in a 3-2 thriller.
The Purple and Gold are riding a three game win streak and have won 13 of their last 16 games. They are led by
Ben Crusinberry who has a team-high 322 kills while teammate
Steven Tarquinio boasts 85 total blocks on the year; 22 of which have been solo blocks.
Joseph Muir has been solid on the defensive end all year and leads the Hawks with an impressive 297 total digs and 2.72/set. The setting duties have been handled well by
Nicolas Sanchez who boasts 797 assist to date.
Recently, Tarquinio was named the Tournament MVP while Muir and Crusinberry earned spots on the All-Tournament Team. Additionally, Tarquinio, Crusinberry and Sanchez were named to the CUNYAC All-Star First Team while
Blake Hogan earned a spot on the Second-Team. Muir was named the Libero of the year and first year Head Coach
James Pompeo took home Coach of the Year honors.
Austen Rerick was included in the All-Sportsmanship team.
In Hunter's last NCAA appearance in 2012, they defeated Kean in four sets. Advancing to the final four, they fell to Springfield College in straight sets. Their NCAA record stands at 1-1.
Wentworth (22-8) captured their first ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) after defeating Rivier in five sets. Junior Jake Reed was named the Tournament MVP in the win while Alex Potts, Jake Red and Kevin McPeek appeared on the All-Tournament team. Additionally, Reed and Potts earned First-Team All-Conference status while Sean Mullen, Jon Roat and Mike Rogachefsky earned Second-Team kudos. Zach Newhouse was named to the All-Sportsmanship team.
