Bronx, NY - The top seeded Hawks defeated the #5 Lightning of Lehman College earlier this afternoon by a score of 5-0 in the semifinal round of the CUNYAC/HSS Men's Tennis Championship Tournament. The 5-0 win improves Hunter's overall record to 11-3 overall and secures the Purple and Gold's spot in the conference championship with an automatic berth to the NCAA on the line.
The Hawks swept the doubles competition to give them a solid 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
Gonzalo Saez Garcia and
Florimond Le Goupil-Maier handled Jason Strudwick and Carlo Francisco by way of an 8-5 victory at top flight doubles. At second doubles, the duo of
Carlos Sala and
David Joseph defeated Gene Nakagaki and Al Joseph Dubouzet by the same score that
Rudy St. Louis and
Filip Koritysskiy defeated Frankelly Ortiz and Christopher Valez at third doubles by; 8-2.
Only needing two wins in singles to secure the match victory, the Hawks did just that and wasted no time doing so. Koritysskiy took care of Ortiz at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-1 while Sala blanked his opponent at second singles, 6-0, 6-0 for the fifth and final point.
The Hawks are awaiting in the finals and will face the winner of #3 John Jay versus #2 Baruch. The game was originally scheduled for today at 5pm, but was postponed due to the weather. They will likely play tomorrow with the championship to be held either Friday or Saturday.
