Staten Island, NY – The men's track and field team opened their 2019-20 campaign on Saturday at the Bill Ward Meet inside the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. The Hawks competed against schools across all three NCAA divisions and held their own, chalking up 20 individual top-10 finishes including one event winner.
Hardik Bhaskar was the lone event winner for the Purple and Gold. He topped the field in the shot put with a heave of 10.64m. He also placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 8.93m. Fellow thrower,
Jean Ady, also faired well. He was the third place finisher in the shot put with a throw of 8.03m and was the runner up in the long jump with a leap of 5.29m.
In the sprints,
Christopher Spurrell,
Obinna Onaga and Adam Tuliback each garnered a top-six finish in their respective events. Spurrell clocked in at 7.45 in the 60m prelims and went on to finish third in the finals, improving his time to 7.43.
Meanwhile, Onaga had a 60m prelim time of 7.50 and then finished sixth in the finals in 7.50. He also checked in at fifth place in the 200m in 24.2 seconds. Tulibacki ran his specialty, the 400m, and posted a time of 53.73 which was good enough for fourth place.
The mid-distance and distance runners had a slew of top-10 finishers. Robert Novo led a quartet of Hawks in the 800m with a runner up finish in 2:11.71. Meanwhile Kieran Weaver,
Griffin Kearney and Daniel Iskhakov finished fourth through sixth respectively.
In the mile,
Kyle Harris was the runner up in a time of 4:48.16 with Weaver placing eighth and Felix Wong placing ninth in times of 5:06.49 and 5:10.65 respectively. Harris was also the top runner for Hunter in the 3k after traversing the 15-lap race in 10:09. Wong, Novo, Iskhakov and
Marco Vargas finished in succession from fourth through seventh.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, January 11 when they compete at the Armory Track and Field Center in the College of New Jersey meet.
