NEW YORK, N.Y. - Already a familiar face in the halls of the Athletic Department, Hunter College Hall of Famer, Dave D'Amico, was led the Hawk men's tennis team to a pair of unbelievable seasons that ended with two CUNY titles. The 1986 graduate racked up 59 wins which stands as the fifth most in Hunter history and also holds the third best win percentage at .787. D'Amico exemplified the spirit of the Hawk as he also was a regular starter for the men's basketball team, helping the squad earn its first ever bid to the ECAC Tournament. We had time to catch up with him HERE:
What have you been up to post Hunter?
"I am the Managing Director / Partner at Treasury Partners. We are a NYC based independent Registered Investment Advisory firm."
What was your favorite memory in a Hawks uniform?
"Several but the Metropolitan Tennis Tournament stands out. This was played in the spring at the National Tennis Center with all schools in the NY metropolitan area including Division 1, 2 and 3 schools. Our team did well and I made it to the semi-finals where I lost to a D 1 player in 1985."
A DIII player making that far in a tournament like that? Now that is truly impressive! Now, what was your favorite memory of your time at Hunter College?
"The fact that we as a team did not lose a conference match in both 1985 and 1986. We also won two CUNY Championships as a team and I won two singles and two doubles flights in both years."
Got to love a little conference dominance like that. Who was the staff member or coach who influenced you the most and how did they achieve that influence?
"Thom Yuneman who was the men's tennis coach was the Director of the NYC Parks and Recreation Tennis program where I was an instructor. He suggested visiting the school where he set up a tour and a meeting with Charlie Brown who was the Athletic Director. After a few discussions I agreed to transfer from Albany State. I asked Thom to introduce me when I was inducted in the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. Had it not been for Thom I would have never went to Hunter."
Has participation in sports at Hunter prepared you for your current life/career?
"It helped form relationships with different supporters throughout the school. Dean Mike Escot introduced me to his cousin, Jordan Berlin who was a partner at Oppenheimer and Company and I interviewed for a job and was hired a week after graduation."
Any advice to the Hawks that are on their way to graduation?
"Network and leverage anything the school has to offer for job placement. Use LinkedIn and social media."
