Box ScoreEDGEWATER, NJ - The Hunter men's tennis team defeated Yeshiva Unviersity on Sunday afternoon 5-4, to earn the teams first win of the 2015 season.
The Hawks started off winning two-of-three matches in the doubles compeition, as #1 pair of Gonzalo Saez-Garcia and
Carlos Sala defeated the Maaccabees #1 pair of David Papis Elon and Charles Saka 8-4.
Florimond Le Goupil-Maier and
Matthew Balilo, playing at #2 doubles, saved two match points to come back from an 8-7 deficit to win 9-8, including a 7-0 victory in the tiebreaker.
"Matt and Florimond caught fire at the right time," said head coach
Eric Metzger. "They continued their strong play into the singles play, which helped us."
The Hawks lost at #1 singles, #2 singles and #6 singles, making the score 4-2, Maaccabees with three singles matches still in play. At #4 singles, Balilo continued his strong play from doubles to defeat Robby Rubin 6-3, 6-0 to get the Hawks within 4-3. The next match to end was #3 singles with Le Goupil-Maier claiming victory in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
The match of the afternoon was the #5 matchup between
Rodolfo Reynoso and Akiva Katz, which Reynoso won 6-4, 7-5 to give the Hawks a 5-4 victory.
"Rodolfo stepped up huge," said Metzger. "This was his first win as a Hawk and he definetly deserves the game ball."
The Hawks return to action Wednesday March 18th when they will take on Farmingdale State in the 2015 home opener at the USTA National Tennis Center.
