Gray is one of the finest and most accomplished cross country runners in a traditionally strong sport at Hunter. He placed second at the 1987 ECAC Cross Country Championships and holds the school record for the cross country course at Van Cortlandt Park, clocking in at 25.40 at the CTC Championships in 1987. He also has the third (25.49) and fourth (25.53) fastest times ever at the fabled Bronx Park. In track and field, Ian placed third in the ECAC Indoor Championships in 1987 and went on to win the same event at the 1988 ECAC Championships. He moved to the world stage after gradating, representing his native Belize at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He competed in the 1,500 meters in Barcelona and the 5,000 meters in Seoul.
