Rosalia Gioia has been a leading force in girls’ and women’s athletics in the metropolitan New York area for the past 50 years. She participated in basketball and field hockey and was sports editor of the Hunter Bulletin. She was selected to the US National Field Hockey team in 1956 and the US National Women’s Lacrosse team in 1957. She was also a nationally rated sports official in basketball, volleyball, softball, lacrosse, and track, and chairperson of the US Field Hockey Association. The former Hunter College women’s softball coach (1958-1964) also had an outstanding career as a high school coach, winning numerous championships and coaching awards.
